Man Utd transfer news includes the latest on Tottenham midfielder Eric Dier as Jose Mourinho tries to bring him to Old Trafford.
Tottenham midfielder Eric Dier is ‘desperate’ to join Manchester United as the club continues its attempts to sign a defensive midfielder.
The 23-year-old England international has offered United encouragement in recent days and M.E.N. Sport understands Dier’s desire to join the club has intensified following recent reports.
Tottenham players are due to report for pre-season training on Thursday and the club is believed to be unprepared to sell Dier despite his eagerness to move to United.
Dier is a boyhood United supporter who grew up idolising Roy Keane and then Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand as he began his professional career as a centre-back.
United have always acknowledged the difficulty they face in negotiating with Tottenham’s challenging chairman Daniel Levy but Jose Mourinho is keen on recruiting Dier or Chelsea midfielder Nemanja Matic.
Mourinho’s habit for weakening rivals in the transfer market continued when United signed Romelu Lukaku from under Premier League champions Chelsea’s noses this week and they could destabilise second-placed finishers Spurs if they prise Dier away from North London.
Levy encouraged United to bid for Gareth Bale four years ago, which partly explained why his protracted transfer to Real Madrid was only completed on deadline day, and Sir Alex Ferguson described negotiating with Levy as ‘more painful than my hip replacement’.
Dier was among the slew of Spurs players who inked lengthy contracts for modest salaries last year and he would be expected to double his £70,000 weekly salary at United.
The former Sporting Lisbon midfielder is contracted to Tottenham until 2021 and the club could demand upwards of £50million for a player they bought for £4m just three years ago.
Kyle Walker’s expected £50m move to Manchester City would decrease Spurs’ need to sell Dier, who is a regular for club and country. His stock rose after excelling during England’s dismal Euro 2016 campaign in France, where he scored their opener in the draw with Russia.
Ferguson signed Teddy Sheringham, Michael Carrick and Dimitar Berbatov from Spurs over an 11-year period. Berbatov joined for a club record £30.75m on a frantic deadline day in 2008 despite Manchester City’s attempt to hijack the deal.
The M.E.N. has also learnt Mourinho regards Internazionale winger Ivan Perisic as the player he wants ‘most of all’ and has been lobbying executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward to push through a deal.
United’s last offer for the 28-year-old was £40m but Inter are demanding more and the situation could be resolved by July 18, when the Nerazzurri fly to China for their pre-season tour.
